Our new Postdoc Buddy Program connects incoming postdocs with current colleagues at Lehigh, creating a welcoming and supportive environment for new arrivals. Experienced postdocs serve as informal guides, offering advice about Lehigh University, the local area, and postdoc life.
Benefits for Incoming Postdocs:
- Gain a friendly point of contact who can provide advice on topics such as housing, transportation, cultural differences, and settling into life in Bethlehem, PA.
- Receive guidance on navigating postdoc life, including where to find essential resources, fun social activities, and practical day-to-day tips.
- Reduce the stress of transitioning by having someone who understands your perspective and is ready to help.
Benefits for Current Postdocs:
- Share your experiences and helpful tips about life as a postdoc at Lehigh.
- Meet and build connections with new colleagues, expanding your professional and social network.
- Enjoy the opportunity to give back by helping others transition smoothly into their new roles.
Time Commitment:
The program typically lasts about 3 months, beginning with initial communication before the incoming postdoc's arrival and continuing through their first month. Communication can range from emails to video calls to in-person meetups, depending on mutual preferences.
Key Topics for Discussion:
- Housing and neighborhood advice
- Transportation and arrival tips
- Resources for settling in, such as grocery stores, healthcare, and utilities
- Cultural differences or questions about life in the Lehigh Valley and US in general
- Opportunities for socializing and networking
What This Program Is Not:
- Assistance with visas or employment negotiations
- Arranging housing or moving logistics
- Professional mentoring (this is a peer support program)
